Laos, a land-locked country in Southeast Asia, is a fascinating country to visit. It is one of the few remaining countries not yet over swamped with tourists, making now a great time to visit.
Most tourists who come will visit Vientiane, its capital, Luang Prabang, a Unesco city, and Pakse. For me, I spend my time in Luang Prabang and then Vientiane.
The impression I get from visiting Luang Prabang is a laidback, full of heritage city. People don't rush to get to anywhere. A place filled with old world charm. There are no towering skyscrapers. Only shophouses, guesthouses and a few luxury hotels.
I spent two fulfilling days in Luang Prabang. On the first day, I wandered around the city.
Welcome to Luang Prabang !
My traditional guesthouse, Lakhangthong Boutique Hotel. The door handles are very unique. The service is commendable. They offer free airport transfers and can help to book tours too.
Breakfast is served outside the doorstep. Great !
A map of the city is provided upon check in. The city is compact and walkable in a day. There is a handy supermarket to stock up on food and souvenir shops and a night market all within walking distance.
The exterior of the hotel
A great start to each day. A menu with egg options and beverages to choose from. Coffee and tea are available all day from the reception.
Only vans are allowed in the city. Big tour buses are nowhere to be seen. There is also the ubiquitous tuk tuk.
There are numerous temples in the city.
Walking in the same direction will lead us to the mighty mekong river
This wooden bridge leads to somewhere beyond
This cafe by the mekong serves the Singapore sling!
Quite different from what I get on my sq flight.
The main temple in Luang Prabang
June is a hot season in Laos. Fortunately, there are many cafes along the main street.
Every night, a road is closed off to vehicular traffic and a night market springs to life. Two rows of tents are set up and vendors display handicrafts and souvenirs for sale.
In the next post, I shall cover some popular tourist attractions beyond Luang Prabang city.
